What I am saying is - 'Kabaali' review

What I am saying is - 'Kabaali' review
************************************************
'Kabaali' - watched the movie. Before stepping into the full review, on first note - I realised that Rajni is also a normal human being like us and he too have to slow down due to age. His diction, walking, body language - you can see everywhere that he is slow though style factor is there. I went to watch Rajni, I did not expected a gret story and narration etc. But, director Pa Ranjith failed to narrate the story in right manner. Story has got all the ingredients to make it a commercial blockbuster if executed well. Not sure what Pa Ranjith's thoughts but the narration is very very slow, it's like snail pace. Movie starts on a promising note and continues for the first 15/20 min and then slow down, that's it - it never picked up the momentum again and revolves aimlessly at places. To add more to the disappointment there is no entertainment and romance factors. So, there is no relief at all, you will be just waiting for the film to bounce back and pick up momentum. Pa Ranjith failed miserably to execute the story with pace and gripping screenplay, forget about reaching expectations of Rajni fans. Action stories/films like this need to be exectud well with gripping screenplay and pace. For example - watch films like Madras Cafe, Rocky Handsome etc. (to my limited knowledge)

Story - there is nothing new or novelty about the story. We have seen hundreds of such movies till the day, difference is this is Rajni movie. It's a story of a person named Kabaali who fights for the cause of Tamil people in Malasia. He becomes a don from a normal person in filmi style. Naturally, few people from the same community joins with Chines to oppose him. That forms the rest of the story and takes us towards climax where good wins over bad. Not sure what Pa Ranjith wanted to make with this age old story except for making it a 'age old' don story that justifying the pace of the film narration. There is no entertainment and romance in the film. And, on another note - it was little confusing whether hero is fighting for family or for the cause of people. Background was not properly shown to elevate villains. If villains were elevated on negative side properly, then there would be an emotional connectivity with Rajni's character to fight against the villains. But, it seems personal rivalry rather than for the people. For neatly half an house after interval, Rajni searching for his wife feels irritating and dragging. Story deviated and disconnected there from the main plot.

Rajni - if there is onething that can attract towards this film apart from title, story and everything else is nothing but the name of Rajnikanth. And, on his part he did what all he can but in a slow pace. Rajni's intro is superb and it raises the expectations. But, after the first fight film slows down and that's it. Not sure if it is the age factor or intentional - Rajni looks very dull and very slow in his mannerisms. If they took that care in old character that's ok but same thing for the young character too means it's the age facor may be. His diction and mannerisms are very slow. He looks uncomfortable at places. First 15 min proved that Rajni still at his ease, but it seems director failed miserably to use Rajni to his energy levels not even half. We can see the confusion on his expressions over 'am I fighting for the cause or for family'. Confusion is written all over the characterisation.

Radhika Apte - she tried to do her best but she is a perfect mismatch to the role of Kumudavalli. The pair looked very odd, someone senior like Ramyakrishna would have been added value to the role. Radhika is not good choice and she did not show that much command over it in a role that has got good hold/control over Rajni's character. Chemistry between then did not work well.

Dhansika - as a daughter to Rajni, she played her character well. She is very confident even when she is sharing screen with a star and actor like Rajni. But, emotional connectivity or chemistry is not well etched between them. In scenes where she get to know her father and reveals to Rajni, her performance was not upto the mark, looks more mechanical than touching.

Winston Chao - did his bit well. We were told that he is villain otherwise there is no point except for trying to oppose the raise of Kabaali that makes him villain. He looks good, made his presence felt and fit the bill.

John Vijay - he got good and lenghty role, did his part well.

Others did what their role asked for. Nothing much to talk about ...

One technical apects ...

Pa Ranjith - This is Pa Ranjith's failure as a director and screenplay writer. Very very slow narration tests the paticence of viewers. He failed at his core job of direction and screenplay ...

Santosh Narayan - music by Santosh Narayan is very good, particularly background music and nerappudaa song. His music boosted the film in many places

Praveen - editing by Pravin is not good, lenght should have been trimmed. He should have taken care to make sure that film is not laggy at places. Particularly in the 2nd half.

Muralivardhan - cinematography by Muralivardhan is nice and he is succesful in creating the mood required for the film. He should have avoided some close up shots. But, he did job job really well ...

Others are good.

Overal, if at all you look back this film is much better product than Kochadayan and Lingaa but still it lacks the 'Rajni factor'. This is particularly the failure of director. We have to wait and see how it fares financially ...
